General Surgery

The abdomen and its contents, the acute abdomen, hernias, biliary disease, bowel, breast and endocrine surgery, and the foundation every other surgical specialty builds on.

Trauma & Acute Care Surgery

Time-critical operative care of the injured patient: the primary survey that finds the killer first, damage control that trades anatomy for physiology, and the discipline of doing the least surgery that keeps someone alive tonight so the right surgery can happen tomorrow.

Colorectal Surgery

Colon, rectum and anus: cancer resections planned on embryological planes, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and its perforations, and the stomas that make radical surgery survivable. The specialty where anatomy, oncology and function meet most visibly.

Hepatobiliary Surgery

Liver, biliary tree and pancreas: the most anatomy-dense corner of general surgery, where the operation is planned segment by segment on imaging before the incision, and where variant ducts and vessels are the rule rather than the exception.

Cardiac Surgery

The heart and great vessels: bypass grafting built on the coronary map, valve repair and replacement stitched millimetres from the conduction system, and the physiology of cardiopulmonary bypass, the machine that lends the patient a heart and lungs for an hour.

Thoracic Surgery

Lungs, pleura, esophagus and mediastinum: lobectomy planned on the bronchial tree, pleural disease from pneumothorax to empyema, and esophageal surgery that crosses two body cavities in one operation. Much of it now through keyhole (VATS) approaches.

Vascular Surgery

Arteries and veins outside the heart: aneurysms repaired from within by stent graft or from without by sew, carotid disease and the strokes it threatens, and the ischaemic limb, where the six Ps and the clock decide everything.

Neurosurgery

Brain and spine: the physics of a rigid box, where pressure is the common enemy, haematomas measured against the clock, hydrocephalus drained by hydrostatics, and spinal cord compression where hours decide function for decades.

Orthopedic Surgery

Bones, joints and the injured limb: fracture fixation from plates to nails, the hip fracture pathway that defines care of the older patient, arthroplasty that trades a worn joint for a working one, and the emergencies, open fractures, compartments, septic joints, where limbs are saved or lost.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Soft-tissue reconstruction organised as a ladder: direct closure, graft, local flap, free tissue, always the simplest rung that works. Hand surgery where millimetres are function, and burns, where the skin's failure becomes the whole body's problem.

Urology

Kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and the male reproductive tract: stones and the obstructed infected kidney that cannot wait, bladder cancer surveyed and resected through the urethra, and a specialty that reached keyhole surgery before almost anyone else.

Otolaryngology, Head & Neck

Ear, nose, throat and the neck's compartments: the airway always first, the thyroid and the nerves that decide the voice, and the high-volume operations, tonsils, grommets, septum, whose small complication lists are learned precisely because the operations are so common.

Pediatric Surgery

Surgery of children and neonates, where the diseases are congenital as often as acquired, the anatomy still moving, and the doses, tubes and consent all scale with age. Bilious vomiting in a baby is this specialty's 'chest pain': an emergency until proven otherwise.

Ophthalmic Surgery
