What each study decides

Investigations

  • Visual acuity & pupils

    • Acuity is the eye's vital sign: measured formally, each eye separately, with pinhole, in every ophthalmic presentation without exception.
    • The relative afferent pupillary defect is the optic nerve's objective witness: it cannot be feigned and it cannot be ignored.

  • Slit lamp & tonometry

    • The slit lamp is the specialty's microscope on the living eye: cornea, chamber, iris and lens in optical section.
    • Pressure measurement turns 'the eye feels hard' into a number, and the number into a treatment tempo.

  • OCT, B-scan & CT orbits

    • OCT sections the retina in microns (the macula's status made visible); B-scan ultrasound sees behind blood and cataract when light cannot pass.
    • CT orbits is trauma's map: foreign bodies, fractures and the orbital abscess, with MRI held back until metal is excluded.
