Investigations

  • Ultrasound

    • The specialty's first instrument: the pylorus measured, the intussusception's target sign found, the appendix hunted, all without radiation.
    • Its honest limits matter too: an unconvincing scan with a convincing story keeps the story in charge.

  • Upper GI contrast study

    • The bilious neonate's urgent test: the duodenojejunal flexure's position and the corkscrew of volvulus, obtained with the urgency of the diagnosis it excludes.
    • A normal study relaxes the room; an abnormal one moves straight to theatre without pausing for more imaging.
